The atomic wall clocks and the radio controlled clocks are the latest developments in the progression of clocks. The atomic wall clocks and the radio controlled clocks are basically the same concept. They are clocks that run by themselves, but resynchronize their time to the correct time either by listening to broadcasted radio waves, or from a superimpossed signal from the power mains. (In both cases these type of clocks are designed to work for specific areas in the industrialized countries) This is really a modern style master/slave clock system, with the benefits of stand alone clocks, plus the benefits of master clocks systems.

Why are they called atomic wall clocks? The wall clock part is obvious, but atomic wall clocks does not mean the it is an atomic clock. What atomic refers to is the master clock that is used is an atomic clock. It is from this master clock that the signal is based upon, and atomic clocks are accurate to 1 second in 1.4 million years. The resynch between the atomic wall clocks or radio controlled clocks and the master clock means that very accurate time is kept. It also has advantages such as the automatic updating of the time for daylight saving where applicable. (Handy for when a power blackout during the night wipes everything, but your clocks will reset to the correct time)

The atomic wall clocks and radio controlled clocks, although newish (1985), are really combinations of technology evolved in the twentieth century. The first master/slave systems appeared in the early 1900's, radio broad casting became popular in the 1920's, and atomic clocks were invented in 1967. It was from these technologies that this progressive step has evolved. Given the pace of clock development, is it realistic to expect the 21st century to produce true atomic clocks for homes, or real atomic watches? Or will the 21st century produce a total change in what we think of as clocks? Time shall tell....
